Dr. Jan Krynski is a full professor at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw.
He graduated in 1967 at the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology with a degree of engineer and master of science in geodesy. He started his research carrier in 1968 at the Department of Geodesy and Geodetic Astronomy of the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously he studied mathematics in 1968–1971 at the University of Warsaw. In 1976 he completed his PhD thesis “Analysis of selected theories of motion of artificial Earth satellites in the aspect of geodetic applications” and received the PhD degree in physical sciences. In 1977 he moved with the whole department to the newly established Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences where he was conducting a pioneering research on the use of satellite gradiometry and satellite-to-satellite tracking in geodesy. He earned his DSc in technical sciences at the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology presenting the thesis „Possibilities of low-low satellite tracking for local geoid improvement”. From 1998 he is a head of the Department of Geodetic Astronomy and later the Centre of Geodesy and Geodynamics at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw. In 2004 he was granted a title of Professor in technical sciences by the President of the Republic of Poland.
Dr. Jan Krynski was a visiting scholar in numerous superior research centres of Austria, Canada, Finland, Soviet Union, USA, – all together over 5 years – and participated in 10 international schools dedicated to advanced problems in geodesy. He also lectured at numerous universities: University of Washington, Seattle, USA (1987–88); University of Calgary, Canada (1988–91); University of Natal, Durban, South Africa (1992–1997); University of Warmia and Mazury, Olsztyn, Poland (1998–2007); Agriculture Academy, Wroclaw, Poland (2004–2005); Higher School of National Economy, Kutno, Poland (2007–2009).
His research interest covers wide spectrum of problems related to geodesy, gravimetry, geodynamics, reference systems, geodetic surveying, celestial mechanics, numerical methods, and computing techniques. In particular, it concerns computing satellite orbits, use of satellite systems in navigation and precise positioning, use of satellite-to-satellite tracking and satellite gradiometry in geodesy, modelling gravity field and geoid determination, geodetic data processing including time series of gravity data and GNSS solutions and their interpretation. Recently his research focuses on temporal variation of gravity field and gravimetric metrology.
Dr. Jan Krynski since the mid of 1970. is involved in activities of major national and international scientific organizations, being in particular a chair of the Finance Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), fellow of IUGG, assistant secretary of the International Association of Geodesy(IAG), fellow of IAG, chair of the National Committee for IUGG by the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS), chair of the Committee on Geodesy of PAS, scientific secretary of the Committee on Space Research of PAS, chief-editor of the Geodesy and Cartography journal of the Committee on Geodesy of PAS.
